'Paeng' damage to infrastructure now at P4.5 billion
MANILA, Philippines — The estimated cost of damage on infrastructure that Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) continues to rise, according to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Monday
In its latest situational report, over 34,900 houses and 800 infrastructures were damaged by Paeng, good for P4.5 billion worth of damage to infrastructure.
81,800 farmers and fisherfolk were also adversely affected after more than 92,000 hectares of crops were left unusable, totalling P3.1 billion in damages to agriculture.
The death toll due to landslides and floods caused by Paeng stands at 156, while 141 were injured and 37 remain missing to this day.
The NDRRMC also said that 1.2 million families or 4.6 million Filipinos were listed as "affected" or displaced by the effects of Paeng.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of calamity in the regions of Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas and Bangsamoro due to the typhoon to ensure price control of basic needs among other things in those areas.
P167.61 million worth of aid has been distributed to residents in the form of financial assistance, family food packs, hygiene kits, so far.
Paeng is among the natural disasters that caused the most damage to the Philippines so far this year.
