Slain lawyer’s remains cremated

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino lawyer John Albert Laylo, who was fatally shot in the United States last month, was cremated yesterday morning.

Laylo’s sister Ann said the cremation was done at Manila Memorial Park and his remains brought to their home in Makati. The ashes will be transferred to a columbarium after a week.

Former vice president Leni Robredo, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, and Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople visited Laylo’s wake.

The slain lawyer was the official counsel of Robredo’s camp before the Makati City Board of Canvassers for the May 9 elections.

Laylo’s Facebook account indicates he was a graduate of Makati Science High School, University of the Philippines – Diliman (Political Science), De La Salle University (Law), and Central European University in Budapest, Hungary (International Business Law). He passed the Bar in 2015.

Leah Laylo, the victim’s mother, and a cousin accompanied the body back to Manila from New York.

Laylo and his mother, who were in the US to visit relatives, were in an Uber vehicle in Philadelphia to catch their flight to Chicago on June 18 when a gunman fired at them. Laylo died from a gunshot in the head.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney apologized for the killing of Laylo and offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the gunman’s arrest.
