Marcos open to divorce, 'but don't make it easy'
MANILA, Philippines — Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos is open to legalizing divorce in the country, but he urged that the process should not be made easy.
Marcos, in a taped interview with Erwin Tulfo and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, said “there are cases where divorce is called for.”
“There are real cases that I have seen where the spouses separate, we still do not have divorce, they separate and the kids are better off… the husband and wife are better off,” he said in the interview that aired Saturday night.
The presidential bet pointed out that the country is “halfway there” with legal separation.
“So let’s take the next step,” he added.
In 2003, the Supreme Court issued A.M. No. 02-11-11-SC on Rule on Legal Separation. It listed ten instances where the husband or wife may file a petition for legal separation.
But Marcos stressed the couples must first work hard on their marriages. “Don’t make it easy,” he added.
“We must allow our couples, our married couples to work on their marriages and work hard on it because sometimes it can fixed. We need to not give them an easy option,” he added.
Other presidential candidates who are pro-divorce are Sen. Panfilo Lacson, labor leader Ka Leody de Guzman and Faisal Mangondato.
