MANILA, Philippines — Following the brazen killing of a mother and son in Tarlac on Sunday, a video of inmates singing “I Don’t Care” by South Korean girl group 2NE1 went viral on social media this week.

The uploader claimed the inmates were waiting for suspect police officer M/Sgt. Jonel Nuezca, who was charged with double murder for killing Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony.

The elder Gregorio was heard singing a line of the K-pop group’s song “I Don’t Care” moments before they were shot point-blank by the suspect. She was responding to the daughter of Nuezca, who told the victims during the scuffle that her father was a policeman.

2NE1 was among topics that trended on social media following the incident, along with other hashtags such as #StopTheKillingPH, #EndPoliceBrutality and #JusticeForGregorioFamily.

It was unclear when and where the 19-second clip of the inmates was taken, although the uploader is based in Cavite, according to his Facebook profile.

The video has been viewed more than two million times since it was uploaded, with over 100,000 reactions and 174,000 shares on the social media platform.

While many have cautioned against trivializing or making light of the incident, some have decided to upload materials referring to the K-pop group and using the song to discuss the incident.

Some, for instance, noted how the incident has forever changed the meaning of the song, which was first released in 2010.
