MANILA, Philippines — Amid a rising prevalence of heart attacks during this season, the Department of Health (DOH) has cautioned the public against excessive consumption of food and alcohol.

“Excess of anything is always bad like too much drinking of alcoholic beverages and binge eating,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque warned over the weekend.

He noted that binge eating and drinking could lead to cardiovascular problems, particularly among people who have high cholesterol and diabetes, as he advised Filipinos to eat in moderation and avoid too much sweets and salty food.

Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo aired the same concern for people who might indulge in eating unhealthy food.

“It’s the holiday season and a season for overindulging also. But having too much food and drink can be bad for the hypertensive and diabetic,” he said. “You can enjoy the holiday, but do it in moderation. We can attend parties, but intake of food and alcoholic beverages must be in moderation so the cholesterol and sugar level will not surge.

Based on studies, medical experts said, stress and overindulgence in food and alcohol drinks as well as failure to take prescribed medication during the holidays could trigger heart attack and stroke.

Data from the Department of Health showed that non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, cancer and diabetes are among the leading causes of death in the country.
