Go to local officials: Ensure government assistance to typhoon victims

Sen. Bong Go meets with families affected by typhoon Ursula in Balasan, Iloilo.

MANILA, Philippines — Local officials should ensure that all aid and assistance from the national government reach typhoon victims.

Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go sounded this call during his visit to victims of Typhoon Ursula in Balasan, Iloilo.

“I’m begging you, this is the time to help others. Have conscience,” Go said in Filipino.

“People chose you as their leaders. I trust you. So please give to the people whatever help is given to them,” he added.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that in Western Visayas, around 5,700 families or 21,900 individuals were affected by Ursula.

Fatalities in the region reached 13 – nine in Iloilo and four in Capiz.

Go distributed relief goods and financial assistance to 213 families still reeling from the typhoon at the Balasan Gym.

The senator pledged to provide uniforms and other school supplies to students.

“I also have food, grocery packs for you,” he said.

Various government agencies were also present during the visit to provide assistance to typhoon victims.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development will provide cash assistance to victims based on the validated list prepared by local leaders, Go said.

The Department of Trade and Industry would give livelihood while the National Housing Authority would give housing materials, he added.
