Congress ratifies longer Maternity Leave bill
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate and the House of Representatives ratified Wednesday the 105-day Expanded Maternity Leave bill.
“This bill is a victory for women, a victory for the unborn and a victory for families,” Parañaque Rep. Gus Tambunting said.
Senators and congressmen comprising Congress’ bicameral conference committee approved Monday the bill that added five more days to the original 100-day maternity bill from the previous 60 days.
Lawmakers insisted the law would benefit the economy, contrary to fears raised by the employers’ confederation.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros described the measure as both historic and revolutionary, adding that it took 26 years to make.Sen. Nancy Binay urged Duterte to sign the law within the month as an early Christmas gift to working mothers.
