MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard commissioned its two new multi-role response vessels on Thursday morning.

The BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engano are the last two of the 10 MRRVs donates by Japan, according to a report from The STAR.

The 44-meter MRRVs will be the primary rescue vessels of the Coast Guard when the extent of a disaster is beyond the capability of other floating assets.

The first of the 10 MRRVs arrived in the country in August 2016, with additional ships delivered every quarter since.

The vessels belong to the "Parola" (lighthouse) class and are named after lighthouses.

Under project terms, the MRRVs will also be used as assistance in controlling oil pollution and in protecting the marine environment.

They will also be utilized in enforcement of all applicable maritime laws within the designated area of responsibility, service as platform for rapid response during relief operations and transport of personnel and logistical support. — Patricia Lourdes Viray with a report from Evelyn Macairan
