MANILA, Philippines — Nine endangered animals were reportedly stolen from a wildlife sanctuary in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Avilon Zoo, on its Facebook page, said three mature red-footed tortoises, three mature black palm cockatoos, one mature yellow-footed tortoise, one mature common snapping turtle and one juvenile brown-tufted capuchin monkey were allegedly taken by unidentified thieves.
“All are endangered animals, which are part of Avilon Zoo Wild Care Conservation Breeding Program,” the management said Tuesday.
It appealed to the public to help them recover the endangered animals.
“Illegal possession and trade of such animals could make you criminally liable,” the Department of Environment and Natural Resources warned.
Mere possession of an endangered animal would be punishable with a maximum of four years of imprisonment and a P300,000 fine under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
