MANILA, Philippines — The strength of typhoon Gardo did not change as it continued to move toward the northern Taiwan area, state weather bureau PAGASA said Tuesday afternoon.

“Gardo” was last located at 635 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, according to the 11 a.m. bulletin by PAGASA.

It packs maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kilometers per hour. “Gardo” is expected to move west northwest toward Taiwan at 30 kilometers per hour.

The southwest monsoon, boosted by the typhoon, will bring rains over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro, northern Palawan and Romblon.

“Residents of these areas, especially those living in low-lying and mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides resulting from heavy rains,” PAGASA said.

“Gardo” is likely to leave the country by Tuesday evening or Wednesday, PAGASA said.

The state weather bureau is also monitoring the cloud cluster east of Mindanao.

Forecast positions:

  • Wednesday morning: 665 kilometers north northwest of Basco, Batanes
  • Thursday morning: 1,185 kilometers northwest of Basco, Batanes
