'Gardo' maintains track, to bring monsoon rains over parts of Luzon, Western Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — PAGASA said Typhoon Gardo is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and "habagat" causing occasional rains over Mimaropa and Western Visayas in the next two days.

In its severe weather bulletin issued 11 p.m. Monday, the state weather bureau also warned residents of Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol, Zambales, Bataan and Aurora of scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

"Residents of these areas, especially those living in low-lying and mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides resulting from heavy rains," it said.

PAGASA also advised against sea travel over the northern and eastern seaboards of northern Luzon.

"Gardo" continues to move at a west-northwest direction at 30 kph over the northern Philippine Sea. It is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility between Tuesday evening and Wednesday early morning.

At 10 p.m. Monday, PAGASA spotted the eye of the typhoon at 860 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes. It packs maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 225 kph.

No tropical cyclone warning signal has been raised by PAGASA.

State weather bureau PAGASA says typhoon Gardo has kept its strength while moving west-nortwestward over the Philippine Sea.

“Gardo” was last seen at 1,165 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes. It packs maximum strength of 200 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 245 kilometers per hour.

No tropical cyclone warning signal is hoisted.

PAGASA says that typhoon Gardo may boost the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will bring monsoon rains over Mimaropa and Western Visayas and occasional rains over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol region, Zambales, Bataan and Aurora until Tuesday.

Residents of Luzon, especially those living in the western section, may experience monsoon rains beginning Wednesday, the state weather bureau adds.

“Gardo” is expected to exit the country by Wednesday.

Typhoon Gardo has slightly strengthened while moving west northwest.

PAGASA says “Gardo” packs maximum strength of 180 kilometers per hour near the center from the previous 170 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 245 kilometers per hour from the previous 210 kilometers per hour.

Typhoon Gardo has kept its strength as it heads toward northern Taiwan, state weather bureau PAGASA says.

“Gardo” was last seen 635 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kilometers.

Pagasa says Typhoon Gardo will bring monsoon rains over the following areas in Luzon:

  • Zambales
  • Bataan
  • Pampanga 
  • Bulacan
  • Metro Manila
  • Cavite
  • Batangas
  • Mindoro
  • Romblon
  • Palawan

The rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies and occasional rain.

Typhoon Gardo continues to move west-northwest over the northern Philippine Sea. PAGASA says it may enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will bring occasional rains over Mimaropa and Western Visayas in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms will prevail over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol, Zambales, Bataan and Aurora.
