MANILA, Philippines — Women, like men, are capable and competent.
The Commission on Human Rights made this point Friday as a response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s remark that some jobs are not for women.
“Women throughout time have proven themselves of being equally capable and competitive across different fields,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann De Guia said.
She added: “It is just right that we give them the due recognition and respect they deserve—both in the way we treat, and speak to and of them.”
Duterte on Thursday once again drew flak for making a misogynistic remark, implying that women cannot withstand threats and intimidation.
“I believe in women, the competence and capability. But not all in life. It should be the case. It’s not appropriate when you cannot stand threats and intimidation,” the chief executive said.
Duterte made the remark days after the online campaign #BabaeAko was launched. The movement seeks to denounce the president’s misogyny and machismo.

Last week, he said that the next ombudsman should not be a woman.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque downplayed the president’s anti-women remarks as “mere play of words,” citing his pronouncements only reflect his frustration over the relentless tirades of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales and ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
The president’s mouthpiece also maintained that there is no discrimination against women in the government, citing the appointment of female officials.
