'Nona' to make landfall in Sorsogon

MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon Nona (international name Melor) is expected to make landfall over Sorsogon early Monday night, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.

The typhoon is forecasted to pass very close to Northern Samar early Monday afternoon and will cross Albay province toward Burias Island as it makes landfall.

At 4 a.m., Nona was located 205 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar with maximum winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph. It is likely to move west at 17 kph.

Public storm warning signals are raised in the following areas:

  • Oriental Mindoro
  • Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island
  • Batangas
  • Cavite
  • Rizal
  • Laguna
  • Rest of Quezon including Polillo Island
  • Southern Leyte
  • Northern Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands
  • Aklan
  • Capiz
  • Northern Negros Occidental
  • Dinagat province
  • Siargao Island

  • Masbate including Burias Island
  • Camarines Norte
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon
  • Southern Quezon

Signal no. 3

  • Camarines Sur
  • Catanduanes
  • Sorsogon
  • Albay including Ticao Island
  • Northern Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Biliran
  • Samar

The weather bureau warned that flash floods and landslides are possible in areas under signals 2 and 3. Storm surges of up to four meters are also expected in the areas.

"Estimated rainfall amount is from heavy to at times intense within the 300 km diameter of the typhoon," PAGASA said.
