MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Grace Poe on Wednesday said that she is "very touched" that President Benigno Aquino III is sympathizing with her position.
In an interview with ANC on Tuesday night, Aquino said that Poe should be allowed to run for president in the 2016 national elections.
The president added that he is hoping that the disqualification case filed against Poe before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) will be resolved soon.
"With his statement he's showing that beyond the colors of politics, he believes in protecting the integrity of a free and fair democratic elections," Poe said in a statement.
Poe earlier announced that she will run for president despite Aquino's offer to be the running mate of LP standard bearer Manuel "Mar" Roxas II.
"I sincerely believe that until his last day as president he will continue to do his best to uphold the will of the people," the senator added.
The SET is currently looking into the question of Poe's citizenship.
Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio has argued that Poe is not a natural-born citizen but a naturalized Filipino.
The camp of Poe, however, pointed out that Carpio's line of questioning pertaining to the law is "erroneous."
