Alleged recruiters of Mary Jane plead not guilty

Dennis Carcamo - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The alleged recruiters of detained Filipino worker in Indonesia pleaded not guilty before the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court on Thursday.

During the arraignment, Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao pleaded not guilty on the charge of large-scale illegal recruitment. They are also facing charges for human trafficking and estafa.

The execution of Mary Jane, now sitting in death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking charges, has been indefinitely stayed after Sergio surrendered to Philippine authorities.

She was found guilty by an Indonesian court in 2010 for smuggling illegal drugs. The 30-year-old worker insisted she was a victim of a drug syndicate.

This is a developing story.
