MANILA, Philippines - McDonald’s Philippines once again surprised Filipinos yesterday by giving away free breakfast and fees with McTollbooth, a customized toll both designed to look like a McDonald’s drive-through, along two of the country’s major expressways.
One McTollbooth was located at the Bocaue exit of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), while the other was at the Nichols toll plaza of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). Motorists who passed by these booths between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. were given free McMuffin sandwiches and did not have to pay toll.
McTollbooth is the Philippines’ participation in McDonald’s imlovinit24 global initiative, celebrated on March 24, which aims to bring the world together through 24 acts of surprise in 24 cities for 24 hours.
Joining Manila in the global campaign were Auckland, New Zealand; Sydney, Australia; Seoul, South Korea; Tokyo, Japan; Guangzhou and Hong Kong, China; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Bucharest, Romania; Vienna, Austria; Warsaw, Poland; Stockholm, Sweden; Milan and Catania, Italy; Copenhagen, Denmark; Paris, France; London, United Kingdom; Madrid, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Mar del Plata, Argentina; Toronto, Canada; and Los Angeles, USA.
McDonald’s Philippines president and CEO Kenneth Yang gave away the first McMuffin at the North Luzon Expressway. Motorists were surprised and excited by the free treats, especially when endorsers Xian Lim, Enrique Gil and Lovi Poe took part in handing out the treats.
Meanwhile, netizens took part in spreading word of the McTollbooth, filling social media with posts and photos of the motorists’ one-of-a-kind experience, making more Filipinos say, “I’m lovin’ it!” using the official hashtags #McTollbooth and #imlovinit.
“With McTollbooth, McDonald’s Philippines is once again able to spread happiness in the morning, this time, to motorists who experience the daily grind of going to work or school every morning. We are delighted to be part of the brand’s global initiative of engaging our customers and bringing the world together with 24 random acts of surprise,” McDonald’s Philippines senior vice president for marketing Margot Torres said.
