MANILA, Philippines — The police Special Action Force (SAF) operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on January 25 became the costliest single-day government operation in recent years.
The loss of lives of 44 SAF commandos in the hands of Moro rebels after Malaysian bomb-maker Marwan was neutralized was attributed to a broken Philippine National Police chain of command, among others.
On Wednesday., relieved SAF chief Director Getulio Napeñas said he was directly reporting to suspended PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima from the outset of the mission targeting Marwan in 2010.
