One soldier killed in ambush in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants on Sunday killed an army intelligence officer by ambush in Sulu, the military said today.

Chester Ramos, information officer of Task Group Zambasulta said the victim was aboard his motorcycle when the Abu Sayyaf militants ambushed him at the village of Danag, Patikul town around 6 a.m. local time yesterday.

Ramos said reports from the Joint Task Group Sulu identified the slain soldier as Arjan Punzalan, assigned with the army's Intelligence Service Group (ISG) based in Sulu.

The victim had just came from the residence of his in-law and was bound to Jolo, the capital town of Sulu when he was ambushed and killed by the suspects, according to Ramos.
