Firecracker manufacturers warned vs child labor
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday warned manufacturers and distributors of firecrackers against employing child workers.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said owners of firecracker companies would be held criminally liable for hiring children.
“Firecracker industry is very hazardous, thus there should be no children in those companies,” Baldoz said.
She also stressed the need for all firecracker manufacturers, most of which are operating in National Capital Region and Central Luzon, to strictly comply with safety regulations.
Baldoz warned that DOLE regional offices are closely monitoring firecracker companies and DOLE can impose administrative sanction against those who would be found violating safety rules.
The labor chief noted that the DOLE is also pushing for the enactment of a new bill that would impose criminal sanction against companies violating safety and health regulations.
Baldoz also said that workers of firecracker companies who would be injured in case of accidents are entitled to compensation and other benefits from their employers.
