‘Palace may have hand in campaign for Noy’s second term’

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang might have a hand in the online campaign pushing for a second term for President Aquino, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said yesterday.

Pabillo was commenting on reports that some netizens were pushing for Aquino to stay beyond 2016.

Malacañang earlier denied that it instigated the calls for Aquino’s second term, but the Manila prelate said he doubts it.

“It is easy to say that they have no hand in that. They allowed this and they might be involved in this. They are testing the waters and they might be behind the online campaign,” Pabillo said.

Pabillo added that the online campaign for Aquino’s second term could be a ploy to push for Charter change.

The bishop also noted that floating proposals to give the current leader another term had been the practice of past presidents like Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

“Oftentimes those who are pushing for term extensions are those who are benefiting from the presidency and we all know that those who are benefiting are the rich and not the poor people,” he said.

“It is the incumbent politicians who want this to happen. Look, they do not want to pass the anti-political dynasty bill and Freedom of Information bill because they are the ones who are benefiting from it,” he added.
