Halong expected to enter Phl today

Pia Lee-Brago - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon Halong is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility today but it may not make landfall, the state weather bureau said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Halong was estimated at 1,340 kilometers east of Central Luzon yesterday afternoon with maximum winds of 130 kph and gustiness of up to 160 kph and was forecast to move west northwest at 10 kph.

Once the typhoon enters the PAR, it will be named Jose, PAGASA said.

The Philippine Coast Guard, meanwhile, advised small sea craft in Northern Luzon against sailing in the open sea as Halong is expected to enter the PAR.

PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said the typhoon would still affect the waters in Northern Luzon with waves as high as five meters. – With Evelyn Macairan
