‘Let Ramadan strengthen resolve for progress’

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino is hopeful the observance of the holy month of Ramadan will strengthen the Muslims’ resolve to contribute to the good of the country.

In his message for the start of Ramadan, Aquino said the fasting month is an opportunity for Muslims to reinforce their self-discipline, compassion and self control, values that are vital to the development of each individual.

“May this event strengthen your faith and inspire you to deepen your commitment to fulfilling our shared vision of lasting, equitable progress,” Aquino said in a statement issued by Malacañang yesterday.

“May the blessed teachings of the Holy Qur’an guide you in this time of fasting and prayer, and allow you to contribute more passionately toward building a better future for our countrymen,” he added.

Aquino said the Philippines “continues to grow more robust” amid diversity, which he described as “a source of strength.”

“Our solidarity enables us to learn from each other and create a more unified and harmonious nation where citizens of various beliefs and creeds can work together to uphold peace and harmony,” the President said.

Vice President Jejomar Binay also joined Muslims in the observance of Ramadan.

Binay said the Ramadan is a time for self-sacrifice and self-restraint for Muslims as they cleanse the body and soul from worldly temptations.

“It is also a time for reflection and refocus one’s self on the worship of God and practice of selflessness,” Binay said.

“As Ramadan begins, may we also remember to respect the rights accorded to each one of us by the laws of God and man. Let us practice tolerance, foster equality and celebrate diversity, and fight discrimination and prejudice based on color, gender or religion,” he said.

Muslims consider Ramadan as the holiest month as it commemorates the revelation of the Holy Qur’an to Prophet Mohammad. Muslims all over the world commemorate the ninth month of the Islamic calendar by fasting. This year, the Muslim holy month will start at dawn today.

Islamic theologians declared dawn today as the start of the Ramadan after failing to see the new moon Friday night.

The sighting of the new moon will determine the culmination of the month of Shaban, and the beginning of Ramadan in the lunar-based Hijrah calendar, a centuries-old rite preceding the start of what is for Muslims a “sacred season” where they focus on good deeds and reparations for wrongdoings.  – With John Unson, Roel Pareño, Jose Rodel Clapano
