Aquino to visit Naval forces defending West Philippine Sea

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno Aquino III will visit on Tuesday the naval command center near the disputed West Philippine Sea.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Aquino will witness the capability demonstration of the Naval Forces West (NFW) Command Center and the conceptual master plan of the Naval Station Carlito Cunanan (NSCC) in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Lacierda said these are among the activities set for the celebration of the Philippine Navy's 116th anniversary this week.

"During this celebration, we also commemorate the sacrifice of our Marines, who have bravely devoted themselves to protecting our territorial and maritime borders. We recognize their hard work and dedication, and in them find renewed inspiration to maintain our commitment to protect our national sovereignty," Lacierda said in a statement.

Lacierda said the NFW is the Navy’s primary operational command securing the West Philippine Sea.

Its upgraded Command Center, Lacierda added, will further bolster the country's defense capabilities and ensure stability in the disputed area with its secure communications equipment and a satellite-based vessel tracking system.

"[The NFW] has been at the forefront of territorial defense operations in the Kalayaan Island Group," Lacierda said.

The NSCC, on the other hand, has been slated for redevelopment which includes the rehabilitation of the pier, living quarters and other support facilities.

"These efforts are in line with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), through which we hope to further improve our defense capacities," Lacierda said.

The EDCA is the new agreement signed by the Philippines and the United States allowing the increased presence of American forces here who will be provided with greater access to local military facilities.

The deal was inked last month during the visit of US President Barack Obama.
