MANILA, Philippines — USS Howard (DDG 83), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, arrived at the Manila South Harbor for a routine port call on Friday.

The United States Embassy in Manila said the visit highlights the strong historic, community, and military connections between the US and the Philippines,  long-time defense allies.

The port call will allow the crew to rest and tour the capital city and nearby historical sites.

The vessel's supplies will also be refurbished during its stop in Manila.

The USS Howard is part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and is homeported in San Diego, Calif.

The Howard has approximately 300 sailors, of whom about 15 are Filipino-Americans. The crew is led by Commander David G. Zook. - with Associated Press
