MANILA, Philippines - Pilipino Star NGAYON, sister publication of The Philippine STAR, was adjudged the “Best Tabloid Newspaper†for 2013 by the first Polytechnic University of the Philippines Mabini Media Awards (PUP-MMA) held at the PUP Bulwagang Balagtas last Thursday.
Awards organizers said survey results revealed that NGAYON showed high credibility and public trust, particularly among its student readers.
The random sampling was conducted among 12,134 students where NGAYON led with a total of 4,479 nods of approval, while the remaining votes were shared by competitors like Abante, Bulgar, People’s Journal, and Tempo.
Racidon Bernarte, chairman of the 2013 Mabini Media Awards, and Edna Bernabe, dean of the College of Communications, said the award-giving body recognizes responsible reporting of media entities in print, television, radio, online media, and advertising that helps in shaping healthy public awareness and opinions on various national issues.
The PUP-MMA was conceived in 2009 as a project of fourth year Broadcast Communications students in media relations under Divina Pasumbal. It was initially named the Gat Apolinario Mabini Awards and was officially launched as PUP Mabini Media Awards this year.
The leadership of PUP gave its all-out support to the project. According to university president Emmanuel de Guzman, the project will now be a yearly event of PUP’s College of Communications and its launch coincides with the 109th anniversary of the university.
Also awarded were radio-TV anchor Anthony Taberna as Best Radio News Commentary Program Host; dzMM, AM Radio Station of the Year; Mel Tiangco, Best Television Public Affairs Program Host; and Eat Bulaga, Best Television Variety Program.
