Navy willing to ship iron sheets for reconstruction effort
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy on Wednesday said it is willing to ship an estimated 300 million tons of galvanized iron sheets to be used as roofs in the repair of homes damaged by typhoon Yolanda.
Navy spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said two logistics ships, the BRP Bacolod City (LC-550) and BRP Dagupan City (LC-551) will be used for the mission. The two ships are capable of carrying 4,000 tons of cargoes.
"These ships can be loaded to the utmost of their capacity and deployed to deliver the (galvanized iron) sheets in Eastern Visayas and Western Visayas" he said.
Fabic added that the vessels can be easily deployed once a request is made.
Officials in the affected areas earlier said about 300 million tons of galvanized iron are needed to repair the damaged homes, as each beneficiary will be needing 20 to 50 pieces of sheets, amounting to 7 million pieces overall.
