Group hope CA order to stop planting of GMOs

Rhodina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A group of environmentalists has expressed hope that the planting of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the country will not be pushed after the Court of Appeals (CA) recently stopped the ongoing field-testing of genetically modified eggplant and its looming commercialization.

“There has been growing evidence of the dangers of GMOs to health and ecology, and it is imperative that any experimentation on this technology be done under the strictest confined conditions until it is proven safe,” said Angelina Galang, Green Convergence president.

She added there has been no long-term study on the effects of GMOs on human health anywhere in the world, and in fact, many studies in various countries have shown the negative effects of GMOs on experimental animals’ organs, growth and immune systems.

The group lauded the CA for stopping the exposure of Filipinos to a hazardous product.

“We are glad that because of the decision rendered by the appellate court, the Philippines now joins other countries that have taken steps in rejecting control by multinationals of our food safety and sovereignty,” Galang said.
