Comelec reminds bets of Lenten campaign ban

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) wants national and local candidates to observe the solemnity of the Holy Week and abstain from campaigning even only for two days.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez yesterday reminded candidates that campaigning is prohibited on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Jimenez said that violation of the prohibition is tantamount to an election offense that could lead to one to six years imprisonment, disqualification from running for public office, and removal of the right to vote.

“Once we receive a report or we find out ourselves about any violation of this rule, we will act on it accordingly,” Jimenez said, adding that the candidates should respect the religious event.

“We hope the candidates will no longer use this opportunity to post campaign materials in places where people pray or meditate,” Jimenez said.
