Power rates go up this month

MANILA, Philippines - Households in Metro Manila and nearby regions may have to pay more for electricity this month on account of higher generation charge last month.

“Initial results from the spot market show an increase in generation prices,” a source from Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said. Meralco services Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

“There was a de-energization of the Luzon-Visayas interconnection from Oct. 8 to 13, so that Luzon’s supply from Visayas was reduced,” the source, who declined to be named, said.

“Market prices rose significantly” as a result, the source said.

Last month’s electricity rates were higher than the previous month’s.
