MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino met with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin yesterday and discussed diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries, including the issue on the West Philippine Sea.
“The West Philippine Sea was mentioned in passing, but in the context of trade and improvement of the economy,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a text message.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is drafting a Code of Conduct on the South China Sea, which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.
The code will be a binding agreement among ASEAN member-states, which includes the Philippines and Myanmar, for the demilitarization of the disputed areas in the region as well as peaceful resolution of conflicting claims.
