Phl to take part in Earth Hour

- Rhodina Villanueva and Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is going to take part in the worldwide energy conservation event called Earth Hour set on March 31, a yearly event intended to raise public awareness on the need to save energy.

Earth Hour Philippines national director lawyer Gia Ibay called on corporations, local governments, media networks and other organizations to join this year’s switch-off, saying the joint effort of the public and private sector will “effect change on the scale required to change the world.”

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for Nature, which is spearheading the activity, expects the current list of groups or companies that already gave commitment to grow as month’s end approaches.

Ibay said Earth Hour is taking a creative leap from its annual lights out event to offer a further opportunity for its communities to be part of actual environmental solutions.

“From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. this coming March 31, WWF-Philippines will again stage Earth Hour to inspire Filipinos to switch off their lights and dare their friends to save planet Earth.”

She said this year, they will promote Earth Hour through the launch of the “I Will If You Will” campaign, a result of an alliance between WWF, Leo Burnett, and YouTube — merging the world’s biggest social video platform with the world’s largest environmental event.

It will use the YouTube video platform to empower people to share a personal dare with the world by asking everyone what they are willing to do to save the planet? – With Evelyn Macairan
