Voters urged to get ID from Comelec

- Sheila Crisostomo -

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is in the process of printing voter’s identification cards (IDs) but these will not be delivered to the voters’ residences.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez yesterday said the IDs would not even be released to the barangay, contrary to the claims of some barangay leaders.

“We won’t deliver the IDs. It is better for the voters to get their IDs from the Comelec office where they are registered for their own security,” Jimenez said.

He said that by 2013, the Comelec would have released some 35 million voter’s IDs in time for the midterm polls.

Right now, some 25 million IDs have been given out, he added.

“We need our voter’s ID not only during election. We can use it for various purposes because it is issued by the government. It is similar to a driver’s license,” he said.

The Comelec, however, will also not notify the voters if their IDs are available for pickup.

“That’s a shortcoming in our system because it will also involve mailing. At the most, we may post notices in our offices. We’ll work on that,” Jimenez said.
