MANILA, Philippines – Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara urged yesterday Education Secretary Armin Luistro to reconsider his policy of banning weekend homework.Angara, who chairs the House committee on higher education, said “a strict but practical guideline should be put in place to ensure that students use their free time exclusively to bond with their families or engage in productive endeavors.”
Without this guideline, he said Luistro’s policy “might just boomerang and would only give students more time to play computer games or begin destroying their young lives with drugs, alcohol abuse and gang wars.”
“This should be a good idea, but there are certain pre-conditions that should be guaranteed by the DepEd first before this program can truly benefit our children, including the assurance that these assignment-free weekends will not just turn our children into drug addicts and criminals,” Angara said.
