DAVAO CITY , Philippines - President Arroyo has assured bishops and Islamic religious leaders that the government would resume talking peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Mrs. Arroyo gave the assurance at the 37th General Assembly of the Bishops-Ulama Conference here Friday.
She said whatever peace accord the government would forge with the MILF would be fully reflective of the people’s will.
Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Annabelle Abaya said a resumption of the peace talks before the end of the year would be “a good Christmas gift” to Filipinos.
“The peace process is on the right track,” Abaya said.
She explained that despite the absence of formal talks, both parties have forged a number of agreements, the latest of which was the pact on the protection of civilians.
Abaya also expressed hope that a breakthrough in the peace process shall take place before the term of Mrs. Arroyo ends next year.
