MANILA, Philippines - Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. is not quitting his post to pursue his political plans at this critical time, especially with the prevailing security concerns in Mindanao.
In a luncheon meeting with defense reporters yesterday, Teodoro pointed out that there is time for everything, and for now he will continue manning his post as defense secretary.
He said his staying in his position is mainly aimed at overseeing ongoing anti-terror operations against the Abu Sayyaf and other lawless groups in Southern Philippines as well as other security concerns in Western Mindanao.
Teodoro, who is eyeing the presidency in 2010, stressed that he is submitting himself to the selection process when he decided to join the administration political party Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
“We’re not yet in the selection process. It’s in September and I still have a job to fulfill as defense secretary. And I intend to do and perform these duties,” he said. – Jaime Laude
