Shanghai businessmen eye investments in RP

Top Shanghai businessmen plan to invest in the tourism industry, shopping malls, and metal and feeds factories in the Philippines, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Consul General to Shanghai Maria Rowena Mendoza spoke about investment opportunities in the Philippines during the New Oriental Entrepreneur Century Forum at the International Conference Center of the Shanghai Hall of Science last Wednesday.

“Citing the visit of Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Shanghai in October 2007 as a catalyst, these businessmen informed the Consul General that they are looking to invest in the following: shopping mall, metal factory, feeds factory as well as in tourism,” the DFA said in a statement posted on its website.

The DFA said the forum is an annual gathering of some 500 Shanghai businessmen where the Top 100 New Shanghai Businessmen List is announced.

The forum is organized by the Shanghai Municipal Association of Scientific and Technological Enterprises, Shanghai International Cooperation Society for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, Shanghai Overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai Municipal Association for Taiwan Businessmen, Promotion of Industry and Commerce for Worldwide Chinese and Shanghai Export Enterprises Association.

It is co-sponsored by the Chinese Association for CEOs, Chinese Female Entrepreneurs’ Development Forum and the Elites’ Club, according to the DFA.

In the coming months, the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai will hold other trade, investment and tourism promotion activities in the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu and Hubei, the DFA said. – Reinir Padua
