DOT adopts own version of ‘Amazing Race’

- Mayen Jaymalin -
Millions of TV viewers follow the frenetic travels of contestants on The Amazing Race.

Now the Philippines will launch its own version of the popular reality TV show, but in real life. And if you are physically fit and love to travel, you may have a chance of becoming a millionaire.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the government is soon to mount its own travel contest offering a P1.4-million prize to either local or foreign contestants.

Called "Island Paradise Adventure Race" (IPAR), the tourism program is meant to lure more travelers to the Philippines 7,000 islands, including lesser-known destinations.

"Since participants in the event will cover a 2,000-kilometer stretch of the Maharlika Highway, they would be passing less known destinations which we hope to promote," he said.

According to Durano, the event will be held from May 7 to 15 and requires contestants to set off for eight major tourist destinations in northern Luzon including Baler, Banaue, Bayombong, Penablanca, Laoag, Vigan, Subic and Metro Manila.

"The three-man race team would be vying for the top prize of P1 million aside from trophies and other gifts," Durano explained, adding that P300,000 and P100,000 would be awarded to two runner-ups.

The Tourism chief stressed the sports-and-tourism event is not purely a contest of speed, because participants who use less fuel in their journey will earn higher points than those who consume more gasoline.

To spice up the motor rally, Durano added the contestants would also face other physical and mental challenges at designated checkpoints and pit stops.

Of course, in cities that have designated checkpoints and pit stops, there will also be festivities and events to help promote tourism and travel.
