1,425 cops in May 01 riot promoted

All 1,425 policemen who defended Malacañang from rampaging supporters of ousted President Joseph Estrada two years ago will be promoted on orders of the National Police Commission (Napolcom).
In a statement, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose Lina, who is also Napolcom chairman, said the promotions are contained in two separate resolutions, which Napolcom had approved "in principle" based on the recommendation of the Philippine National Polices Special Promotions, Awards and Decorations Board.
"The bravery displayed by these police officers that resulted in the successful dispersal of the rioters, suppression of the rebellion and maintenance of peace and order is laudable, and it is but fitting to give them a well-deserved promotion," he said.
Lina said the Napolcom is still evaluating the extent of participation of the other police officers in the defense of Malacañang on May 1, 2001.
Under the law, a special promotion can be granted to any police officer "for acts of conspicuous courage and gallantry at the risk of his/her life over and beyond the call of duty," he added.
The special promotion will be accorded police officers 1 and up to chief inspectors.
The Napolcom said the police officers to be promoted had also rendered the followings services: Medico-dental assistance, round-the-clock monitoring of the movement of rallyists, intelligence gathering; and protection of government offices and vital installations. Nikko Dizon
