One year and eight months after they exchanged "I do's" in what was described as the "Showbiz Wedding of the Century" on April 28, 1998 in her native Ormoc City, Richard Gomez and Lucy Torres finally got a much-awaited and very much welcome message from the stork.
"Yes, I'm pregnant!" Lucy, 25, gushed during a phone interview with The STAR yesterday. "Finally, I am!"
When Lucy informed Richard, 34, about it last Sunday afternoon, Richard leaped for joy -- and cried.
In a recent STAR interview, Lucy admitted that she and Richard have been working hard at having a baby. "We've been working double time," said Lucy who co-stars with Richard in the ABS-CBN sitcom "Richard Loves Lucy," "and we won't mind if we'll have twins."
Lucy first felt the first signs of her pregnancy first week of December when she missed her "monthly," although she thought she was just "delayed." She started having morning sickness (throwing up and all) between Christmas and New Year and almost collapsed at a Bench party where she was invited to award some of the outstanding employees (Richard is a Bench signature model).
"We just came from Baguio at that time and I thought I was just tired," recalled Lucy. "I wanted to throw up; I was feeling dizzy. I felt so weak that I almost collapsed onstage."
Lucy mustered enough guts to tell Richard that she might be pregnant last Sunday when Richard came home from his hosting job on ABS-CBN's noontime show "A.S.A.P." Together, they did the EPT (early pregnancy test) on Lucy and, voila, three minutes later, the EPT produced a positive result.
Later that afternoon, they heard Mass together at a church near their home in Greenhills, San Juan.
"During the reading of the Our Father," said Lucy, "Richard felt like crying. Ako rin, naiiyak na."
If and when, Lucy will give birth sometime in September and it will be, as they've been wishing, a Dragon Baby (2000 being the Year of the Dragon).
Asked what she and Richard prefer, a boy or a girl, Lucy simply said, "At this point, any will do, basta healthy lang."
