Philstar.com MUSIC interviews: Tanya Markova (May 14, 2012)

Tanya Markova is a rather strange band. Their eight members like to paint their faces white, wear dresses and accessorize with wigs or knee-high socks. Their onstage antics include blowing bubbles and merrily prancing around like children let loose in a playground. Watching them perform is like being in a Tim Burton movie with an indie-pop soundtrack.

They have aliases that criss-cross actress’ names with actors’ (Rufa Mae Milby and Heart Abunda are but two examples), refer to their music as shock pop and have song titles like “Opposite Pusit” and “Yak My Bulate”. Apart from playing word games with their followers on Facebook, they also have a penchant for posting ghostly status messages.

What is the idea behind all these? What kind of message are they driving at? Two words can sum it up: Who cares. They are making thousands of people happy with their catchy hooks and tongue-in-cheek themes. And maybe at a time when everyone seems to be taking themselves too seriously, Tanya Markova may be just what we need.

The dudes of Tanya Markova are their (un)usual self in this exclusive interview with Philstar.com.
