Controversial topics often make for interesting movies. The idea of life after death has been a constant source of inspiration, from the classic horror and suspense thrillers, to heart wrenching dramas, and slapstick comedies.
From the 80s to the early 2000s, there have been streaks of films that have dealt with the dubious pleasure of having the protagonist rejoin the living, after being momentarily put to death. But rarely have there been movies that deal with this regular theme in a new way. Life After Beth is a breath of fresh air to this genre, by changing the game and taking the notch a little higher,
Packed with a stellar cast of comic veterans, such as Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, Paul Reiser and Cheryl Hinds, together with young break through stars, Audrey Plaza, Dane Dehaan, and Anna Kendrick, Life After Beth is an easy shot to the top of the cult film genre. The film gets going when Beth (Aubrey Plaza) mysteriously dies and rises from the dead end eventually discovers that she has a newfound appetite for human. Life After Beth plausibly navigates on the zombie elements while keeping the right amount of romance, drama and an excellent medication to soothe the shock—comedy.
While being a genre of its own, Life After Beth is further substantiated by Hollywood’s fast-rising star Dane DeHaan. After being a vicious villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a young bootlegger in Lawless, and a poet on a full throttle in Kill Your Darlings, Dane DeHaan went from his usual brooding, melancholic roles, to a hopeless romantic beau in Life After Beth. Often being compared to the great Leonardo DiCaprio circa Leo’s Romeo and Juliet days, Dane DeHaan is surely a film delight that will send every fangirl swooning.
With an exciting mash-up zombie and rom-com, while adding some Dane DeHaan goodness, Life After Beth is a film you don’t really expect and surely won’t wanna miss! Get your hearts, guts and laughs ready and catch it in cinemas on September 3!
