Robin, Go hinirit ibalik ang 16-vote threshold sa impeachment

MANILA, Philippines — Hinirit nina Senador Robin Padilla at Christopher “Bong” Go, PDP-Laban at ilang abogado at mamamayan sa Korte Suprema na baligtarin ang desisyon ng Senate Impeachment Court na nagbaba sa bilang ng boto na kailangan para mahatulan si Vice President Sara Duterte.

Sa petisyong inihain noong Oktubre 6, 2026, iginiit ng mga petitioner na ang 16-vote threshold ay nakasaad sa Konstitusyon na nangangaila­ngan ng pagsang-ayon ng two-thirds ng lahat ng 24 na Senador upang mahatulan ang isang impeached official.

Kinukuwestiyon ng petisyon ang desisyon ng Impeachment Court noong Setyembre 23, na nagpapahintulot na kwentahin lamang ang two-thirds requirement mula sa mga senador na itinuturing na legal at factually na may kakayahang lumahok.

Binigyang-diin ng mga petitioner na ang sinasabi ng Konstitusyon ay “two-thirds of all the Members of the Senate” — hindi two-thirds ng mga senador na present, bumoboto, o may kakayahang lumahok.

Sina Go at Padilla ay umapela sa kapasidad bilang senador; ang PDP-Laban ay kinatawan ni Chairman Alfonso Cusi, Attys. Israeilto Torreon, Jaime Bondoc, Ferdinand Topacio, Raul Lambino, Resci Angeli Rizada-Nolasco, at Philip Salvador.

Respondents naman sina Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, ­Senator Francis Escudero, House Speaker Faustino Dy III, at Prosecution Panel sa pangunguna ni Rep. Gerville Luistro.

Hinihiling nila sa Kor­te Suprema na maglabas ng Status Quo Ante Order at/o Temporary Restraining Order at ibalik ang 16-vote requirement para sa conviction.
