3rd Mayor John-John Garcia Cup kicks off with a bang in Barili

CEBU, Philippines — The third edition of the annual Mayor John-John Garcia Cup Sports Festival successfully kicked off last Friday, June 14, at the RVA Memorial Sports Complex in the municipality of Barili in sourthern Cebu.

Hundreds of Barilihanon athletes spread in 42 teams are seeing action in the month-long tilt that features 11 sporting disciplines.

These are basketball, volleyball, taekwondo, badminton, futsal, chess, off-road enduro and motocross, lawn tennis, pickle ball, and “bangkarera”, a one of a kind boat race.

“This is a celebration of unity, sportsmanship, and the skills of our local athletes,” said Barili Mayor John-John Garcia in a statement.

“This tournament aims empowerment of the youth through sports, encourage friendship, build camaraderie, boost health and fitness, and expose the athletes in the grassroots level in our municipality,” Garcia added.

The multi-event gathering is among the highlights of Barili’s annual town fiesta in honor of their beloved patroness St. Anne on July 24.

Meanwhile, Mary Ann Alvarado of Maghanoy emerged as the fairest in a bevy of beauties to romp away with the Best Muse trophy.

Jennifer de la Cerna of Pang-Pang and Arabelle Siton of Tal-ot took the first and second runner-up honors, respectively.

Vanessa Secuya of Tubod and Venice Bhergel Borbon of Mantalongon completed Alvarado’s court.

On the other hand, Team Japitan bagged the Best in Uniform award. Malolos and Tal-ot settled for second and third. – EBV
