MTRCB chief Villareal inspires aspiring writers

MANILA, Philippines – To inspire aspiring comedy writers, Eugenio “Toto” Villareal, chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), graced The Michael V Creative Writing Workshop on Oct. 24 at the Executive Lounge of GMA Network Center.

The MTRCB chief shared his knowledge and expertise with the participants as a practicing lawyer and professor of media and entertainment law.

“Here, we present the various aspects of effective comedy writing from the perspective of the audience. There are also tips on how the gags may be delivered. In our experience at MTRCB, we felt the need to consider the sensitivities of vulnerable sectors like women, children and persons with disability,” said Villareal.

Villareal acknowledged that a writer plays an important role in the society. “For me, the writer is the soul of the show. How an actor should play the character starts with the writer. At dahil diyankailangan malinaw sa ating writers ang kahalagahan ng pagtataguyodsa anumang larangan ng human dignity.”

With the MTRCB presently celebrating its 30th anniversary, Villareal encouraged the aspiring writers to be empowered and always, at the end of each day, to wear the parent’s hat.

The Michael V Creative Writing Workshop is a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity that was launched by one of the biggest names in Philippine comedy and show business, Michael V himself, to help hone and discover the skills of aspiring comedy writers.
