MANILA, Philippines - LezBoys, the first and original all-lesbian performing group in the country, is composed of Kim Orencio (22); Karl Goulds (24), Kurt Diaz (26); Clark Perete (22); Kenzo Nicdao (25); Kyle Gascon (24); Kadz Zaraga (19), Kian Young (20) and Aki Perez (26). They have only been together for a short while, and yet, have already gotten themselves noticed not just because of their talent, but because they are the first-ever group of their kind in the music scene.
They are slated to do a big show today at the F Club Phils., and tomorrow, Aug. 30, they will be recognized as the Most Outstanding All-Lesbian Group in the Philippines in the 28th Global Excellence Awards night to be held at the AFP Theater where they will be awarded along with other major-league performers like Lea Salonga and Pilita Corrales. Their Facebook fan page has more than 5,000 followers, and they have a fast-growing and loyal band of supporters known as the LezCrew that follows their shows. At present, the group performs at places like The Crowd Bar in Mandaluyong every Friday, and currently on a regular spot at The Library in Malate every Wednesday.
All of them, except for one, are in steady relationships, but they do not allow these to get in the way of the group. Discipline is imposed. There are fines if one or more of them is late or absent, and the two of them who live some distance from Metro Manila — they are based in Cavite and Calamba, Laguna — make sure to let the others know if they will be late.
The group is happy that so far, their performances have been well-received. Says Kim: “The LGBT community is so wide-ranging now, and the people that come watch us, they clap for us, and they shout for us. We’ve never had bad reactions from anyone.”
All nine of the members are honored and proud to have achieved what they have in so short a time. They are collaborating with hitmaker Larry Hermoso and will soon release their debut album, with Malas Ang Puso Ko, as the carrier single. There are still many dreams for them to fulfill — dreams of collaborating with other artists, like Aiza Seguerra, Gloc-9, Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Kyla, Jay-R and, of course, Charice who achieved fame on the international stage — and this step is only the beginning.
