MANILA, Philippines - Creativity defines our species — it underpins our favorite technology, lies behind our music and arts and has allowed us to journey beyond our own planet. For a long time, it was seen as a gift of the gods, something beyond scientific explanation… until now.
The journey starts with an investigation into the difference between the right and left sides of the brain. Surprisingly, creativity does not sit equally in the brain. While the left side of the brain helps us see the detail in a problem, it’s the right side of the brain that helps us to make connections between seemingly unrelated things.
Professor Charles Limb, a jazz fan who is interested in musicians, is able to improvise, creating new pieces each time they play. By scanning their brains, he discovers that jazz musicians have a unique ability to switch off a neural constraint system, allowing them to be more creative.
But it’s not all about sitting back and letting your mind wander. Horizon discovers that there is a stronger correlation between creativity and obsession than creativity and intelligence. In short, hard work pays off. You need days, months, even years of mastering the basic skills and knowledge before you can start coming up with creative solutions.
