MANILA, Philippines - After the ‘deluge’ of foreign Valentine acts, one more is coming up and he’s none other than Don McLean (photo) who is performing in A Starry, Starry Night with Don McLean at the Araneta Coliseum on March 2.
McLean will sing his hits, including the classic Vincent which is his tribute to 19th-century Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh.
Since the ‘70s, he has released 24 studio albums and seven compilations. His songs have been remade by, among others, Madonna (American Pie), Josh Groban (Vincent), George Michael (The Grave, about the Vietnam), Shirley Bassey and Elvis Presley (And I Love You So, which is so well-loved in the Philippines that it was used as a title of a hit local movie).
His song Wonderful Baby is a salute to Fred Astaire who would later record it himself. Superman’s Ghost is a tribute to George Reeves who portrayed Superman on the ‘50s TV series.
American Pie is the longest song to reach No. 1 with a running time of 8:36 minutes. It was so long that some stations played only part one of the original split-sided single released back then.
