As of this writing there are only a few hours to go until the big night but I have not heard anything about us Pinoys being able to watch the 27th MTV Video Music Awards Live on TV. But no matter. Thanks to the new technology though we can now keep tabs of all the proceedings on line. If you are in school or in the office this morning while the event is going on at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, it is Sunday evening out there, you can sneak a peek into Twitter or any of the many live blogs on line to find out if there had already been a Taylor Swift/Kanye West encounter.
OK, we all want to know if Lady Gaga will win a record 13 Moonman trophies at this year’s VMAs. She might. The Bad Romance video is stunning. But admit it, thanks to his jackass behavior last year against Taylor, Kanye is the star that everybody will be looking out for at the VMAs. He will be there. But MTV has announced that it has not lined up anything that will bring him and Taylor together.
Taylor will be there. Her Fifteen is up for the Best Female Video award. So if these two will be under one roof at the same time, there is a strong chance they might come across each other on stage, or on the white carpet, in the press room or anywhere else. Who knows, Kanye might even do a repeat of last year’s fiasco. Like if Taylor loses to Lady Gaga, he might just go up there, snatch the microphone and say that it is Taylor who deserves the win.
Now what Kanye did last year jacked up viewership of the VMA. The numbers could be even higher this year. More so because if West really does a repeat, Lady Gaga is not going to go all kitty kitty and say nothing. Can you imagine what it would be like if a jackass were to come up against a tiger? Like a tigress is how I imagine Lady Gaga would react. Kanye might not only bleed like he said he did after what he did to Taylor. He might disappear from the face of the earth.
Now if I were Swift and Kanye were to come up to me and apologize personally, I guess I would let him grovel a bit, enjoy the moment and then turn all princess and graciously forgive him. Something like that would be really nice and would make great news after the awards.
Another potential source of trouble is Justin Bieber. The teenaged phenomenom is a nominee in the Best New Artist category for his Baby video featuring Ludacris. He has very stiff competition in Ke$ha for Tik Tok; Jason Derulo for In My Head; Nicki Minaj featuring Sean Garrett for Massive Attack; and Broken Bells for The Ghost Inside.
Fans of the Bieber all over the world, and I really mean internationally, have mounted a strong lobby for him to win the Moonman. They started voting the moment the nominations were announced and have done so everyday since. That can translate into a lot a votes. So if he loses, you can just imagine what the reaction from these fans would be like. Win or lose though Bieber fans who are watching the VMAs are already winners because they will get to watch their idol in a very special number on the MTV stage.
Also set to perform are Usher, 30 Seconds to Mars, Paramore, Drake, Mary J. Blige, Swiss Beatz, Florence and the Machine, Linkin Park, B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Eminem who will do the opening number.
The Slim Shady is on top of the world right now with his album Recovery and single I Love The Way You Lie featuring Rihanna raking it big saleswise. He has eight nominations including Video of the Year, Best Male Video and Best Hip Hop Video for Recovery’s first single, Be Not Afraid. This year has been one of his best and his luck might just hold up at the VMAs.
Come to think of it. Do you think Rihanna will show up at the VMAs? Would Chris Brown? It will not be as sensational as a Taylor Swift and Kanye West Meeting but should also be interesting.
Back to the awards. Lady Gaga might just win a lot of them. But there is one category wherein giving the Moonman to somebody else would be really nice. This is the Best Collaboration trophy which I think should go to Jay-Z & Alicia Keys for Empire State of Mind. That would be really nice.
