Pinoy Idol Daryl Celis puts his best foot forward

The most nerve-wracking part of GMA 7’s Pinoy Idol is the elimination night aside from the Final Two face-off come finals. Why? Because it doesn’t spare any of the finalists from being booted out.

No one is indispensable. Everyone is vulnerable. Daryl Celis, who has been in the bottom spot twice, can attest to that.

Recently, Toffer Rei, the man with the rock star vocals and mien, sang his last song during the Jaya week. With him that week was Daryl. Fans of Daryl were surprised about text votes results because their idol got positive comments from Wyngard Tracy, Jolina Magdangal and Ogie Alcasid.

“I’m just thankful,” says the heartthrob-singer whenever he is sent back to the safe couch. “I think we (the contestants) should be happy that we have reached this far. Everything is all up to Him and destiny.”

Daryl shares he was uneasy and nervous the first time he became part of the bottom group with favorite Robby Navarro. He was more relaxed the next time. After all, he is ready to pack his bags, take his final bow and move on.

In the tradition of Idol, one has to be voted out and only one can claim the Idol title.

Having been saved for two consecutive elimination nights, Daryl thinks he has a mission to prove that he might be the one. “Laban kung laban,” he says.

Whether he will be eliminated or will still be in the running, Daryl will try to make a connection with the audience and perform with all his heart to make it to the final cut. (He did just like that in last Saturday’s gala performance singing a Pupil song and he received nods of approval from the three judges.)

He also knows he is up against strong competition.

Kid Camaya is good in R&B and pop. Jayann Bautista has never been into the bottom two. Warren Antig sounds original in every song. Gretchen Espina improves now and then and has the charm that translates into text votes.

Daryl, however, considers Penelope and Ram Chaves the Pinoy Idol aspirants to beat. Penelope makes smooth, engaging performances while Ram does a mean rock and delivers a passionate performance.

Daryl assures fans he will put his best foot forward every chance he gets.

But then again, it remains everybody’s ball game. Every Idol finalist has the chance to be “it,” especially that Pinoy Idol is solely based on text votes. Televiewers should be reminded that Pinoy Idol is a talent search whose winner will represent the country in the next Asian Idol or in the World Idol. The first winner of Pinoy Idol should possess a powerful vocals that will wow anyone and charisma that could transcend cultural boundaries. That one should have the total package — talent and looks.

Pinoy Idol gala night airs Saturdays after Pinoy Records and elimination nights Sundays. For Idol updates, catch Pinoy Idol Extra weeknights.
