The wish of every man: Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya

Every man in this valley of tears wishes to be happy. Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya is uttered every so often by men regardless of age, sex, nationality, belief, social status, vocation. The wish for happiness is the theme of an upcoming Viva film, aptly titled Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya, topbilled by Pops Fernandez, Albert Martinez and Diether Ocampo; directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes; and written by Lualhati Bautista.

Pops plays a university guidance counsellor trapped in a loveless marriage. Albert is her husband, a cruel and vicious politician who refused to set Pops free as he needs her when he runs for public office. Diether is the private detective hired by Albert to get solid evidence against Pops’ infidelity.

The twists and turns of the plot of Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya focus on the three main characters’ search for happiness, be it for good or bad.

Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya
is Pops’ follow-up to last year’s Linlang, her first challenging role on the big screen. It was a challenge she faced with guts and determination – and judging from the good reviews she got, Pops passed it with flying colors. Linlang, a box-office hit, was also produced by Viva Films and directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes.

Albert, it goes without saying, is one of the country’s finest actors, lately typecast in offbeat and mean roles. He won awards for Segurista and Sidhi.

Diether is a matinee idol slowly but surely turning into a fine dramatic actor in such films as Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin opposite Angelu de Leon and Soltera with Maricel Soriano. The two films were certified hits, enhancing Diether’s bankability.

Also starring in Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya are Bojo Molina, Anton Bernardo, Allyson VII, and Patricia Javier.

Bojo dares to take a risk in the movie by playing a tormented homosexual, which jolted family, friends, and fans. He’s identified with good-boy roles on TV and here he is doing a love scene with a bold star with an unusual name, Allyson VII. Bojo says he wants to escape from that good-boy mold and accepting the gay part is a good start. He reminds that once on television he played a macho dancer, but that one places in comparison with his gay role in Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya.

Allyson VII and Anton, despite their bold image, may well be called actors. Their mentor, director Maryo J. de los Reyes, made them act and act well in Sa Paraiso ni Efren, which earned them nomination from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Best actor for Anton and best supporting actor for Allyson VII in the Urian Awards. In Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya, Anton had a one-night stand with Pops, after which he pesters her with another bout.

Patricia is Albert’s paramour, marking her retun to the bold wave, which she did so well in her launching picture, Ang Kabit ni Mrs. Montero. In time, Patricia is confident she’ll be recognized for her acting and not merely for her physical assets.

Also in the cast of Gusto Ko Nang Lumigaya are John Arcilla, Tessie Villarama, Jackie de Guzman, Dodi de la Paz, Bonita Donato, David Granado, Dodie Lacuna, and Romeo Vasquez in a special role.
